News from The Farm (May 2010)

We are refurbishing the soft fruit area and hope to have a good supply of fruit in the summer and also have to put a new cover on our polytunnel greenhouse.
So as you can see, we have lots to do! If you would like to help with our gardening on a voluntary basis please contact the farm manager at dcrosby@saffronwalden.essex.sch.uk
Lambing
The Fruit Area
No lambs have been born this year.
Chickens and Egg Production
We now have 40 Rhode/Rock hybrid pullets which should be in full lay shortly so we should have lots of eggs for sale soon. We will probably get some more day old chicks in the Autumn.
Our major project at present is to purchase a chicken shed for our birds and to improve their fencing and security. We will be using recent donations for this purpose, in particular from SW Round Table Carnival Committee but if anyone would like to make a further donation please contact Jackie Damary-Homan - petjacdh@waitrose.com
The Dexter Cows
Both looking forward to going out to grass and calving sometime in June and our goats continue to enjoy morsels such as pupil's homework.
Vegetable Plots
There is a great amount of interest in growing one's own food both here at school and nationally.
Our students and Farm Club members are starting to plant vegetables for the coming season in their raised bed areas.
The Sixth form Electives allotment group have been working hard to establish 4 large raised bed areas in the wildlife garden area and will hopefully have lots of produce to sell in the Summer and Autumn.
